Press Release

On view from August 30 through September 30, The Drawing Room in East Hampton is pleased to present "Fiona Waterstreet: Sculpture". A separate press release is available for the concurrent exhibition, "Charles Jones: Early 20th-Century Photographs".

A longtime resident of Amagansett and New York City, Waterstreet is a well-known potter whose imaginative porcelain sculpture derives from both hand-built and wheel traditions. Sculpting the clay form is only the beginning of the expressive process for Waterstreet, whose approach to multiple firings and complex glazing techniques allows for rich experimentation. Her first solo show with the gallery includes an array of glazed birds and abstracted variations, as well as fresh interpretations of ancient utilitarian objects.

Among the various porcelain sculptures are a flock of endearing hand-built birds enveloped in black, gold luster, and crackled white glazes. Waterstreet’s abstracted birds range from intimately scaled, tender forms to silhouettes of unique force. In her urchin-shaped Meditation Balls, Waterstreet presents centered power domes. Her spirited series of earthy Folly jugs suggests anthropomorphic beings caught in transition between one species and another. The movement and texture of each profile create active, alluring silhouettes.
