Mel Kendrick : At the Core: sculpture and cast paper
The Drawing Room is pleased to spotlight a selection of new sculptures by Mel Kendrick that draws attention to the artist's extensive exploration of the expressive potential of working within the limitation of a single block of wood. Two elegant works created with tightly grained sapele mahogany contrast the blonde-hued splayed form and jagged silhouette of Frame (2026), which evolved from a found block of street timber. The installation also includes a small new edition in bronze and a cast paper relief produced in collaboration with the Dieu Donné studio in New York City. In contrast to the process of cutting apart and re-arranging solid blocks of wood to construct imposing volumetric forms, Kendrick’s experimentation with fluid paper pulp provide a means to capture a single impression of an improvised, puzzle-like composition in low relief.
