Thomas Nozkowski: Paintings & Drawings

June 24 - July 25, 2016
Press Release

On view June 24 through July 25, The Drawing Room, in cooperation with PACE gallery, is pleased to present selected paintings and drawings by the acclaimed painter, Thomas Nozkowski.

Characterized by eccentric shapes in curious juxtapositions of color and pattern, Nozkowski‘s compositions have lyric personality. Rigorous and infinitely inventive, his sensuous paintings draw from his daily observation and musings about nature, art and life.

In this selection of oils on paper and on linen and smaller colored pencil and collages on ink jet prints, the visual and cerebral components of Nozkowski’s pictorial syntax evoke a playful universe of metaphorical options. While each work has an element of discovery he uses drawing and notational systems, repetition of forms, grids, and spectrums of color to hold his ground. The juicy brush strokes of a lime green and yellow crosshatched field give central space to a banner of Crayola hues. In a darker painting also from 2011, rows of white hexagons float on a wine red field turning candy colored at the top and bottom. In L-8 from 2011 the green checked harlequin form seems to waltz in a back bend across a ladder of colors. There are no recognizable views, places or things yet one feels the mysterious and imaginative power of painting to express our being here.
