From July 5th through August 5th, 2019, The Drawing Room is pleased to present an exhibition that highlights formal relationships between Jack Youngerman’s works on paper from the 1950s and 1960s and ink drawings and gouaches of the past decade. In pairing early compositions that explore the dynamic interplay between positive and negative shapes with recent paintings on paper that mine intricate variations in radial symmetry, the show offers viewers a rare opportunity to identify consistent hallmarks that unify the oeuvre of one of the East End’s most esteemed artists. A small selection of beach stones painted with polychromatic patterns reveals a whimsical interval within the artist’s rigorous practice, and another echo of his vibrant geometric structures.

Over a career spanning more than six decades, Youngerman has received international recognition for paintings and sculpture that share a distinctive language of curvilinear and geometric forms. Beginning in the early 1950s, Youngerman’s interest in pattern and geometry in the natural world was bolstered by influential encounters with European Modernism, classical and ancient architecture and non-western art traditions experienced during travels in Europe and the Middle East.
