Clifford Ross: Small Water

From June 8 through July 9, 2007, The Drawing Room in East Hampton is pleased to present "Clifford Ross: Small Water", an exhibition of three series of intimately scaled black and white photographs that capture the beauty and power of water, a recurring subject for this artist over the course of the last decade.

In silver gelatin prints dating from 1998 to 2002, Ross captures the effects of light and weather conditions observed in vastly different bodies of water. From the thunderous storms of the Hurricane series, to the tightly cropped arabesques of water and light captured on the surface of a swimming pool in the Water series, to the sun-strewn ocean tides of the Coast of Africa series, Ross composes resonant images that evoke the turbulent and tranquil power of water. In a departure from his recent monumental Mountain photographs, the exhibition Small Water explores nature at a remarkably different scale, primarily in contact prints that measure from 2 x 3 to 5 x 4 inches each. The selection includes unique proofs from Ross’s well-known Hurricane series, which he photographed over a period of six years along Hamptons beaches – from East Hampton’s Georgica Beach eastward to Amagansett. These images were included in his 2005 Aperture monograph, Wave Music, with an essay by Arthur Danto and an interview with A.M. Homes.
